Equipment
What do I need?
Field hockey stick
Running shoes or cleats
Mouthguard
Shin guards (recommended)
What size stick should I get?
The taller you are, the longer a stick you’ll need. A stick that is too long or too short for your height will make it harder to control the ball.
We recommend:
5’ and under: 34 inches
5’ to 5’3”: 34-35 inches
5’4” to 5’9”: 35.3-36.5 inches
5’9” and up: 36.5-37 inches
Good beginner sticks
Field hockey sticks can be expensive, with some sticks costing over $450 CAD. However, there are many cheaper sticks that are better suited to beginners and casual players. These include:
Mazon Star Field Hockey Stick, 34’’, 35’’ - $45
GX1000 Ultrabow Mint/Pink Junior Composite Field Hockey Stick, 34’’, 35’’ - $75-100
Malik Wood Field Hockey Stick, 36.5’’ - $60
Mazon Fusion 500 Field Hockey Stick, 36.5’’, 37’’ - $90
Kookaburra Unisex Sky Mid Bow Field Hockey Stick, 36.5’’ - $97
Where can I buy a field hockey stick locally?
The two main sellers of field hockey equipment in the GTA are Revamp Sports (based in Hamilton), and AkPro (based in Mississauga). You might also be able to find used field hockey sticks on Facebook Marketplace.
Do the type of cleats/running shoes matter?
Field hockey players play in all sorts of shoes - from trail runners to runners to soccer cleats to field hockey cleats. Any shoe that is comfortable to run in and does not contain metal spikes is appropriate footwear.
What options are there for mouth guards?
There are 4 options:
As is from the store, $20
Get a custom one from a dentist, $90-200+
The tighter that the mouthguard fits your teeth, the more comfortable it will be. Try a store bought one first, and if you find it too uncomfortable, perhaps look into getting a custom one from a dentist.
